NTABAKULU – The Eastern Cape is one of the poorest provinces in the country.
Last month it entered a technical recession and shed 77,000 jobs.
High unemployment and low economic growth are the biggest problems facing premier Oscar Mabuyane.
This was the main focus of his speech at the state of the province address in Ntabankulu, where he made bold promises to accelerate job creation but opposition parties are not convinced, and say they’ve heard it all before.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane says he often wakes up in a pool of sweat, stressing about the high unemployment rate in his province.
He says this administration has now mapped out a Provincial Development Plan.
It’s aimed at growing key sectors such as agriculture, forestry, tourism, and the ocean economy.
Mabuyane delivered his state of the province address in Ntabakulu, where he told Members of the Provincial Legislature and guests that the administration will also address another great challenge, the escalating cost of living.
But the leader of the opposition in the legislature says much of these promises were also made in Mabuyane’s first term.
It is clear to achieve all of these objectives in the next five years will be a daunting task.
